By law, New York City businesses must recycle certain materials. Therefore, carters are required to recycle materials that have been designated as such by the New York City Department of Sanitation and to inform customers of the City's recycling requirements. The following commercial establishments are required to recycle the following materials:
- Non-food establishments must recycle high-grade office paper, newspapers, magazines, catalogs, phone books, corrugated cardboard, and textiles.
- Food establishments, such as restaurants, delis and cafeterias, are required to recycle containers made of glass or metal, plastic bottles and jugs, aluminum foil and aluminum foil products, and cardboard.
Bagging or Bundling of Recyclable Materials:
- Glass and metal containers, plastic bottles and jugs, and aluminum foil products must be placed in blue or clear plastic bags.
- Cardboard, magazines, telephone books and newspapers may be bundled and tied, or placed in clear plastic bags or recycling dumpsters or containers.
- Empty boxes may not be used as waste receptacles.

In addition, a customer may be able to cut its waste removal costs by recycling its waste. Depending on the market condition, certain recyclable materials may be valuable, so it is advisable to negotiate with the carter on recyclable materials such as cardboard and high-grade office paper.
